Description

This Continuing Legal Education (CLE) program delves into the concepts of trauma and compassion fatigue, emphasizing their prevalence and impact within the legal profession. Attorneys often encounter clients who have experienced significant trauma, and the process of empathetically engaging with these clients can lead to secondary traumatic stress or compassion fatigue. This course aims to equip legal professionals with the knowledge to recognize the signs of compassion fatigue, understand its implications on their practice and well-being, and implement strategies to manage and mitigate its effects.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Define Trauma and Compassion Fatigue: Understand the definitions and distinctions between trauma, secondary trauma, and compassion fatigue, particularly in the context of legal practice.
  2. Identify Symptoms and Risk Factors: Recognize the common symptoms of compassion fatigue and the specific risk factors that make legal professionals susceptible.
  3. Understand Ethical Implications: Explore the ethical considerations related to compassion fatigue, including its potential impact on attorney competence, diligence, and client communication.
  4. Implement Management Strategies: Learn practical strategies to manage and mitigate the effects of compassion fatigue, including self-care practices, mindfulness techniques, and the development of a trauma-informed approach to legal practice.
