This CLE session explores the historical significance, constitutional implications, and enduring impact of the Fifteenth Amendment, which guaranteed the right to vote regardless of race, color, or previous condition of servitude. Through a compelling legal and historical narrative, participants will trace the role of Black self-determination in shaping the fight for voting rights, from the Revolutionary War through Reconstruction and into the modern era. The course analyzes key legal developments, racial justice struggles, domestic terrorism, and evolving interpretations of voting rights by the U.S. Supreme Court, including recent decisions like Shelby County v. Holder and Allen v. Milligan. Attendees will leave with a deeper understanding of the Amendment’s promises—and the systemic challenges that continue to threaten them.
