Description

The Lawyers in Distress Continuing Legal Education (CLE) course is designed to address the prevalent yet often overlooked issues of mental health challenges and substance abuse disorders among legal professionals. Through this course, participants will gain insights into the various stressors and mental health issues commonly faced by lawyers, as well as learn strategies for overcoming these challenges and accessing necessary resources. The course will cover topics such as lawyer assistance programs and major problems for attorneys including stress, anxiety, depression, substance abuse, and burnout.  By the end of this course, participants will gain the knowledge and skills necessary to improve their own health and well-being, along with the tools to effectively assist and encourage others in seeking help.

Learning Objectives

  1. Understand the mission and availability of lawyer assistance programs across different states.
  2. Identify major stressors and mental health issues affecting attorneys, including stress, anxiety, depression, substance abuse, and burnout.
  3. Recognize warning signs and symptoms of mental health challenges, including substance abuse, among legal professionals.
  4. Learn strategies for overcoming challenges and promoting mental well-being in the legal profession.
  5. Understand the intersection of legal professionalism and mental health and substance abuse, including high-risk factors and seeking help.
  6. Familiarize oneself with key resources and recommendations for addressing mental health and substance abuse challenges in the legal profession.

Brian S. Quinn serves as the Education and Outreach Coordinator at Lawyers Concerned for Lawyers of PA, Inc., an independent non-profit committed to the well-being of lawyers, judges, their families, and law students. In this role, Brian conducts CLE approved educational seminars and programs covering a wide range of topics related to substance use, mental health, and general wellness in the legal profession. He regularly presents to lawyers and organizations on a state, national, and international level.

Additionally, Brian is the founder of the Law Offices of Brian S. Quinn, P.C., established in Havertown, Pennsylvania since 1973. His firm is dedicated to meeting the diverse needs of families and businesses in the community, with a primary focus on estate planning and administration. With extensive experience in DUI, divorce, elder law, and real estate transactions, Brian is committed to delivering client-focused results at a reasonable price.
