Description

Before 2024, social media operated largely unregulated, serving as a global digital town square for communication and content sharing. During the COVID-19 pandemic, it became a vital tool for human connection and entertainment. However, its darker side is now under scrutiny, with lawsuits and data revealing intentionally addictive features, harmful effects on children, and threats to credible information. In response, state governments are rapidly enacting laws to limit youth access and regulate AI-generated content, while federal efforts focus on national security risks. This presentation will provide an impartial overview of existing social media regulations and offer legal insights into what’s ahead.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Examine the federal laws governing social media platforms and their implications.
  2. Identify key state regulations affecting social media use and content restrictions.
  3. Analyze precedent-setting lawsuits involving social media, focusing on personal injury, impacts on minors, privacy concerns, and First Amendment rights.
  4. Anticipate emerging legal trends and future regulatory developments in social media law.
