Description

The Cybersecurity Basics for Lawyers Continuing Legal Education (CLE) course offers a comprehensive introduction to essential cybersecurity concepts tailored for legal professionals. As technology increasingly permeates the legal landscape, lawyers must be equipped with the knowledge and skills to protect sensitive client information and maintain the integrity of their practice. Through this course, participants will delve into cybersecurity foundations, types of cyber threats, minimum requirements for safeguarding data, and the critical role of lawyers in mitigating cybersecurity risks. By the end of the course, participants will be better prepared to navigate the complexities of cybersecurity and uphold their ethical duty to safeguard client confidentiality.

Learning Objectives:

  1. Gain a fundamental understanding of cybersecurity terminology, including key roles and concepts within cybersecurity frameworks.
  2. Identify common types of cyber threats and their potential impacts on legal practice, such as spyware, ransomware, and business email compromise.
  3. Recognize minimum requirements for cybersecurity compliance and the consequences of failing to implement basic controls.
  4. Understand the role of lawyers in addressing cybersecurity risks, including learning technology and risks, protecting privilege, and ensuring compliance with contractual obligations.

Owner & Founder


Sarah W. Anderson owns SWA Law LLC and LegallyCyber.com, representing public and private entities on cyber incident response, regulatory compliance, the implementation of enhanced cybersecurity practices, and contract negotiations for technology products and services. Assisting with over 100 cyber incident responses, Sarah advises leaders and technology professionals on preventing and mitigating liability before, during, and after cyber incidents.  She also teaches seminars on cybersecurity and artificial intelligence law across the United States.

Prior to founding SWA Law, Sarah was in-house counsel with a technology non-profit and a “big law” partner, focused on toxic tort and property litigation. Sarah is licensed to practice in Louisiana and Texas. Sarah is also the former chief legal counsel for the State of Louisiana ESF-17 for cyber incident response. Sarah is a proud veteran, serving in the U.S. Army Reserves as a Lieutenant Colonel, and a former Distinguished Military Graduate from the University of Georgia.
